AFB Review: “Gary Unmarried”

When it is on: Wednesday, 7:30pm on CBS

Thoughts going into: Another CBS sitcom, much like the 20 or so a year that are just regurgitating BAD ideas of shows that failed in the past.

What is it: It is a show about a home painter named Gary Brooks (played by Jay Mohr) who recently got divorced, and now tries to adapt to singlehood after 12 or so years of marriage, while trying to have a civilized relationship with his ex-wife… And of course, misadventure and hi jinx ensue…

Episode Reviewed: “Pilot”
In this episode, we are introduced to Gary and his ex-wife Allison (Paula Marhsall) shortly after their divorce, and after counseling they decide it would be a good idea if they did NOT get into another relationship right away, so as not to freak their children out. Unfortunately for Gary, this becomes increasingly difficult considering that he is painting the lovely Vanessa’s (Jaime King) place, and quickly decides to NAIL her prompting a relationship. On the flip side, it is discovered that Allison is humping Dr. Krandall, (Ed Begley Jr.) who just happened to be Gary and Allison’s marriage counselor.

Memorable Quote: (Between Gary and Vanessa after hooking up)
Vanessa: I don’t know. I spend one night with you, and you want to take me away for the weekend? I must have been pretty amazing.

Gary: Until I check the video tape from last night I won’t know for sure.

What works: Let me start off by saying I am NOT generally a Jay Mohr fan. Infact, I hate him in almost everything he does, including and not limited to his roles in “Jerry MaGuire” and his “SNL” stint, particularily when he does his “Christopher Walken” impersonation I want to punch him in the face with a Iron.. That being said, this role suites him well, and if there was ever a person born to play an irresponsible ex-husband/father, it is certainly Jay Mohr. Also, the fact that this show’s two leading ladies are extremely attractive and Ed Begley Jr. does a phenomenal job as the Fiance’/Dr., it is quite a delightful little show.

What doesn’t work: The kids.. As much as I understand the fact that having these little monsters in the show only adds to the bickering and power struggle between Gary and Allison, therefor making their existence necessary, they missed Big Time in casting these kids.. In my opinion, you need one of two things as a young child actor, LOOKS, TALENT, or BOTH. Sadly, these two kids have neither.

Sas Appeal: sas2(This is the level of appeal I feel that Sasquatch would have for this show, maximum being 5) Although it is a show that you really don’t have to concentrate hard to enjoy, and won’t miss much taking 7 or 8 smoke breaks during it’s duration, the lack of things blowing up and people falling down adversely hurts the Sas Level of this show..

Would I watch it again? Yes, In fact it is one of the shows that I currently have as a “Series Recording” on the DVR. If this review hasn’t convinced you, I suggest that you take it upon yourself to check it out.. What else are you going to do on Wednesday night?

  1. I have always liked Jay Mohr, but can see how some people would hit him with the DOUCHE BAG stamp. My DVR has been grabbing this show as well, but It is not a show that I give 100% of my attention to. Instead I passively watch it while playing with my computer.

Nice use of the creepy icon. I made that for him you know!! It is one of those things I do while shows like Gary Unmarried play in the background.
