Movie Reviews Strike Back

We have another quick roundup of what to see (or not) at your local theater, but I wanted to give a quick heads up on whats coming up soon. From everything I’ve read, “The Dark Knight” is going to be the best film of the summer. Some have called it the “Godfather II” of comic book movies; and it looks like a sure bet that anyone remotely interested in this should see it as soon as they can. “Hellboy II” is also supposed to be amazing, which is likely considering it’s Guillermo del Toro; who if you haven’t heard is going to be making “The Hobbit”, and was the one responsible for the fantastic “Pans Labyrinth”. Avoid “Meet Dave” and see “Journey to the Center of the Earth” in a 3D theater with a heavy dose of your favorite chemical.

KUNG FU PANDA
Jack Black voices the title character Po, in a good animated film about fitting in and working for a dream. Dustin Hoffman, Jackie Chan, Lucy Liu, Angelina Jolie and a long list of popular actors voice this warm-hearted family film that’s full of obscure kung fu references that only a total geek like me would get.

WANTED
Here is a movie that takes the best parts of “The Matrix” and “La Femme Nikita” and pulls it off. Angelina Jolie (again) stars as an assassin working for a group of weavers (yep, it does get weird) under the always excellent Morgan Freeman. An office-space drone, played by James McAvoy (who looks like he’s happy to be there), life is interrupted with news of his fathers death. What follows is an exciting, preposterous, and you feel like you should be laughing but are having too much damn
fun watching anyway.

HANCOCK
Will Smith, the most popular movie star on the planet, did his job well. Unfortunately, besides Jason Bateman (Arrested Development movie is coming!) and the special effects team, everyone else failed. The first half of the movie is great, but along the way it looses focus and it can’t decide what kind of movie it wants to be. I’ve heard that this was originally going to be a R-rated dark comic
movie, but was re shot for a PG-13. Maybe we will see that on DVD, but I can’t completely recommend this with so many other great movies out (or coming soon).

Oh, and by the way. You should be a fan of Bruce Campbell, and the excellent USA network show “Burn Notice” begins it second season this Thursday.
